Is eBay always the cheapest option?

Do not presume that eBay will always be the cheapest place to buy something. I love eBay, I’ve used it for years to buy and sell and it really is a fantastic site but ultimately it’s just another shopping mall with lots of shops (be it individuals or businesses) selling you their goods. If you remember this and treat it as just another website to look at on your way to finding the best deal then you’ll be fine.

There’s numerous occasions where I’ve shopped around to find the best deal on something and noticed people bidding on the same item, spending far more than what you could purchase that very same thing for elsewhere.

So just remember, you can get fantastic bargains on eBay but don’t presume that everything on there is cheaper.

In the Real World

I was hunting around for, the very funny, Harry Hill’s TV Burp on DVD the other day and after using the usual comparison sites, cashback sites and other avenues I found the cheapest price on sendit.com for £6.89, including postage (if it’s your first purchase from sendit.com then using Quidco saves you an extra 4% bringing the total cost down to £6.62). The best deal I could find on a Buy it Now1 auction on eBay was £15.90, including postage. Looking through ended items I noticed someone had purchased the very same DVD for £21.99, including postage! It just goes to show that if you shop around you really can get yourself a bargain and not pay over the odds.

  1. Buy it Now is different from an auction. It allows the seller to set a price for the item and then the buyer simply buys it at that price - so, basically it’s just like using an online shop to buy your goods
